Perhaps a cornerstone of this website and the theme of its writings is that one should always be a good person. Rarely is there a time to act otherwise. I believe that by being good people and doing good unto others, we can find fulfilment and, indeed, enlightenment – if you’re into that kind of thing. When talking about goals, about dreams, and about life, it is easy to feel a bit daunted. It is often viewed as easy to give up on a goal in favour of maintaining the status quo simply because we worry about the cost of failure. Over our life, this worry slowly develops into a fear. Partly due to it being normalised in our society to fear failure, but also because we remember how it feels to fail.

Is the greatest problem with other people ourselves? The self-delusion epidemic.

In the early 1980s Benjamin Libet conducted a series of experiments where subject’s brains were monitored whilst they chose to initiate an action. It was concluded that the brain was initiating the action before the person became aware of “deciding” to do it. What this study challenged was the concept of ourself being all powerful within us. In guiding our behaviour the conscious self’s role is not quite what we thought it was. When we think about our conscious mind and the power it holds the role is overstated because it feels so powerful. To put it another way, the conscious mind is naturally deluded about its own nature.

New Year, same me: my thoughts on the January Blues and how to beat them

January sucks. It tends to be even colder than December and yet we have no big Christmas festivities or New Year celebrations to look forward to at its conclusion. In January it’s still dark in the morning when you leave for your job and dark when you come home. Those of us who are lucky will have a window they can stare out of at the sun – when it isn’t covered in grey clouds. With nothing to look forward to in January and the high probability that your New Year’s resolutions will all end in failure by the time the month is up it is easy to see why some people can get a bit depressed.

My amazing hobbies and happiness

We all want to do what we love. For some people that is their career. Their job. For many, however, it is what they do outside of work that brings them the most happiness and enjoyment.

I am no exception to this rule.

I enjoy my job but I do not love it. I need to do other things to keep happy and that is where my hobbies come into it. Over the past seven years or so I have developed my hobbies from infrequent instances to more regular activities.
